A lake that is rich in ducks, grebes and gulls and can be nicely overseen from a bird observation tower.
Portimojärvi is one of the best bird lakes and one of the most valuable wetlands in the area. The lake is actually a regulated extension of the Tengeliöjoki River. Many birds breed in the area and Portimojärvi is also a valuable as a gathering area for waterfowl during migration as in the summer closing season. Among the breeding birds are Eurasian Wigeon, Red-necked Grebe, Goosander, Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveler, Arctic Tern, Black-headed Gull, Little Gull, Tufted Duck and Smew. Other birds you can encounter are Whooper Swan, Slavonian Grebe (Horned Grebe), Common Goldeneye, Common Crane, Common Sandpiper and Wood Sandpiper. But many more, see the birdlist below. Best time for a visit is from half May until the start of autumn migration.
The bird tower is located north of Lake Portimojärvi, on the Aavasaksa-Raanujärvi road (932), about 8 km from Aavasaksa towards Raanujärvi. Click on the P in the map to get directions.
