Description

Île d'Aix is an island of approximately 1.20 km2 with many different habitats. There is a fairly large forest, mainly composed of conifers, but also species of deciduous trees. Among the species present in this environment, you find Coal Tit , Crested Tit or Eurasian Blue Tit. During migration, Pied Flycatcher and Common Redstart are very common. Some raptors are also present, such as Eurasian Hobby or Sparrowhawk, and, more rarely, Eurasian Goshawk. Other breeding species usually sing in the undergrowth, such as Dunnock, Wren, Song Thrush and European Robin.

Among the other areas of the island, there are large cereal crops, in which you can find other bird species, such as Red-legged Partridge, Common Pheasant, Meadow Pipit, Eurasian Skylark or Western Yellow Wagtail. Birds of prey are also present, like Eurasian Kestrel or Common Buzzard. In migration, you find other species such as Northern Wheatear or Whinchat. In winter, very large groups of Common Chaffinch, Brambling, Eurasian Siskin and Greenfinch are formed in fields.

Finally, the last main environment is made up of marshes, in which different species nest, such as Black-winged Stilt, Avocet and Zitting Cisticola. In Autumn and Winter, these marshes offer refuge for many species of shorebirds, notably Dunlin, Little Stint, Spotted Redshank, Green Sandpiper, Black-tailed Godwit, Eurasian Curlew, Red Knot and many others. At low tide, these birds generally feed on the mudflat which surrounds the island. Numerous gulls (breeding birds, migrants and winterers) are present on the island. You can observe Common Gull, Herring Gull, Yellow-legged Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Black-headed Gull, Mediterranean Gull and also terns like Sandwich Tern. Many other rarer species can be observed. The Red Kite and the Osprey are two migratory raptors quite present on the island in autumn.
