Pompignan Plain

Hérault  >  France

This mosaic of fields, shrubby wastelands and garrigues is a very nice area to spend a morning searching for typical mediterranean breeders.

Description

The whole Pompignan Plain area is nice at all seasons but specifically from april to june when all breeders are there : European Roller, Tawny Pipit, Iberian Grey Shrike, Woodchat Shrike, European Bee-eater, Western Orphean Warbler, Eurasian Nightjar, Wood Lark are unmistakable among many other common species. Ortolan Bunting can still sing from time to time, although they have become really scarce. Bonelli's Eagle and Egyptian Vulture are a real possibility when the weather is clear and windless. Expect up to 40 species in a 2-3h visit.

Access

The Pompignan Plain is accessible from the D181 between Conqueyrac and Pompignan. Take one of the tracks that leave eastwards and wander around, possibly quite far. Just do as you feel it. Press a P on the map for a parking point, but there are many other options. Don't enter too much into woodlands, vineyards or garrigues however, since they will not be as rich as shrubby wastelands. Both sunrise (best) and sunset visits will give good results, especially in mid-may to mid-june. Avoid midday hours. You can include this area in a car/bike visit also including Pompignan, Sainte Bauzille de Putois, Sauve and Saint-Hyppolyte du Fort, even possibly moving down to the Mas de Londre area.
