Reservoir from which the 5 hectare basin Vorbecken Buch is a bird sanctuary that attracts numerous interesting bird species.
The Bucher Stausee is a reservoir located in the suburb of the same name, Buch, in the municipality of Rainau. Most interesting part for birders is the "Vorbecken Buch" bird sanctuary. A 5 hectare basin where numerous rare bird species have already appeared. Different species of ducks, geese, divers and herons can be seen all year round. There are also migratory birds, especially waders, which rest in the shallow water of the Vorbecken Buch and build up fat reserves for onward migration. A whole range of interesting birds of prey and with a bit of luck also seagulls, terns and Common Kingfisher can be found as well as various ducks, geese, Ruddy Shelduck and Goosander that winter in the Vorbecken Buch. But also smaller birds like Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting, Grey Wagtail and Blackcap. See the birdlist below.
The best way to get to the protected area is after turning off the B 290 onto the L 1029 in the direction of Röhlingen. There is a parking lot for hikers in the valley. Click on the P in the map to get directions. From there, you can make a 2,6 km circular walk around the Vorbecken Buch. You have the best viewing opportunities from the hill above the nature reserve. Another observation alternative is the specially set up observation platform on the embankment of the Vorbecken Buch.
