Recreational lake that is used by wintering waterfowl. Also many breeding birds in the trees around its edge.
The Elfrather See is a lake that is mostly interesting in winter for wintering waterfowl, mainly diving ducks such as Tufted Duck, Common Pochard and others. Also Goosander can be seen quite reliably in winter. In the winter 2021 / 2022 Long-tailed Duck spent several weeks on the lake. There are many trees and hedges around the lake, which contain a wide variety of common song birds. The main attraction are the winter waterfowl, though.
There are three car parks around the lake and you can hike all around it. The circular walk indicated on the map is about 6,5 km long.
At weekends the lake is used for recreationial activities (rowing, sailing etc.), which may drive some of the waterfowl to the side arms. It's easier to be early or on a weekday to get better views.
