The Elzwiesen are one of the last large wet meadows areas in the Upper Rhine. It is a good place to watch migrating birds in spring and autumn.
The wet meadows of Elzwiesen are irrigated in March, August and November. End of March/ start of April and August are the best times to watch migrating birds on the flooded meadows. Common migrating spiecies are Wood Sandpiper , Ruff , Common Greenshank , Black-headed Gull and Garganey. Also rarer species like Spoonbill , Whimbrel and Black-tailed Godwit can sometimes be found on the irrigated areas.
Breeding birds are Eurasian Curlew , Northern Lapwing , Common Nightingale and Red-backed Shrike. Many Great Egret , Grey Heron and White Stork can be observed feeding in the area. The meadows are irrigated in steps from south to north. So most times only one part of the area is flooded. Note that the area has limited access from March to June.
The area is best explored by foot or bike. The trainstation Herbholzheim is near by (2 km). Note that the area has limited access from March to June.
