The area has been used for natural reusage but since 1995 it is a conservation area. It is still characterized by water but mainly shruby meadows and forest.

Description

Freiburg is a city worth a visit and the Rieselfeld is close enough to be compatible with a visit to the town. In the wet areas, you can find wetland-loving birds such as ducks, Common Snipe, Wood Sandpiper, Great Egret, Water Rail, Northern Lapwing and Grey Heron. Other birds you can see in the surrounding area are Eurasian Wryneck, Common Cuckoo, Great Grey Shrike, Red Kite, Black Kite, Eurasian Skylark, Red-backed Shrike, European Stonechat and Greater Whitethroat. In the forest areas that are adjacent to the nature reserve breed Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Black Woodpecker, Golden Oriole and Eurasian Nuthatch.

It's a 5 minute walk from tram-station Bollerstaudenstraße (line 5) or bus stop Mundenhof (line 19). Also near these stations there is anough space for car-parking.
