It's and excellent place for White-tailed Eagle, harriers and Rough-legged Buzzard. In winter there are huge numbers of wintering geese, ducks and Common Crane. Around the lake there are scattered bushes, reedbeds, flooded meadows, and marshlands and even some wooded dunes. The varied landscape offers plenty of opportunity to see interesting birds all year round.
Both north and south sides of the lake can be accessed via Rhinow. For the south side of the lake with the birdwatching tower you can best park in Prietzen and walk from there
