A small body of water surrounded by farmland. In summer, when the water level is lower, muddy banks are exposed, perfect for waders.
Waders stop at the Holzendorfer See during the spring and autumn migration. Maybe not in huge numbers, but there is a large species diversity: Ruff, Northern Lapwing, Common Greenshank, Spotted Redshank, Common Redshank, Wood Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, Green Sandpiper, Dunlin, Curlew Sandpiper, Little Stint, Temminck's Stint, Common Ringed Plover and Snipe. There is a chance for rarer species like Broad-billed Sandpiper, Red Knot and Sanderling. Also observed here are Pectoral Sandpiper and White-tailed Lapwing. In the spring, all the "spring" ducks also stop here: Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Garganey, Common Teal and Eurasian Wigeon. In late autumn you can meet here a large number of Common Crane and Whooper Swan. During the breeding season Northern Lapwing, Common Tern, Little Ringed Plover and Greylag Goose nest here.
Preferably by car. Holzendorfer See is about 15 minutes from Prenzlau. The village of Holzendorf can also be reached by bus. The route along the lake runs along an overgrown dirt road from the village on the southern bank of the water reservoir, from where there is the best access.
