Description

Kieswerk Bad Düben is a renatured gravel pit. Coming from the road, you cross the dike to reach wide and narrower unpaved paths that lead to the small ponds and the Mulde River. In 2002, the old gravel pit was breached to create a channel connecting it to the Mulde river. This resulted in the development of side channels, some of which resemble stagnant waters. Two of these are designated and used as fishing ponds. Nevertheless, the area provides ample space for Common Kingfisher, European Bee-eater, White-tailed Eagle, Grey Heron, Great Egret, beavers, muskrats, otters, and many other species to thrive. The area is also popular with numerous migratory birds, which find plenty of resting places in the surrounding fields and meadows.
