The Finkenmühle ponds are part of the greater area of the Plothener Teiche pond complex. The shallow and overgrown ponds near Finkenmühle are rich in birds.
The Plothener Teiche (Plothen ponds) extend over about 75 km². The nickname 'Land of 1000 ponds' is no coincidence, because there used to be about 1,600 ponds in this area. Today there are still about 600. The Finkenmühle ponds are a small part of the area, but one of the best parts for birding and it has an observation tower. Among the birds you can see in the area are Common Shelduck, Garganey, Northern Shoveler, Common Teal, Little Grebe, Cuckoo, Common Crane, Little Ringed Plover, Green Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Marsh Harrier, Red Kite, Red-backed Shrike and Yellowhammer.
The Plothener Teiche (Plothen ponds) are located near the villages of Plothen, Dreba and Knau. On the map you see a circular walk of 6 km in the Finkenmühle area. It passes the big pond complex with a bird observation tower and several other ponds in the surroundings like the Mittelteich, Kohlungsteich and Mahlteich. You can also make a short cut (see the map) to shorten the walk to 3 km.
