Nice area of ponds and renaturated wetlands bordered by mature woodlands. One of the best spots in the area to see White-tailed Eagle and Garganey.
The Pohnsdorfer Stauung is a favorite birding place close to Kiel that is always worth a visit. After the moors were ditched and dried in the the 1950s most of the biodiversity was lost, the subsequent renaturation in the 1990s, while not restoring the moors created large wetlands and reedbeds inhabited by diverse waterfowl, waders and rails as well as reed inhabiting passarines. Wintering geese and ducks can be found in high numbers during the cold month. Its always worth sitting down close to the reeds and listen for Water Rail and the occasional Spotted Crake.
Access by public transportation is difficult (Bus station Pohnsdor in Preetz) the area can easily be reached by car or bike. The next trainstation is Preetz (5km). Cars can be parked by the entry into the area.
Very early mornings and evenings are the best times to visit. Views from the hide can be spoiled by a low sun in the east.
