Steinhuder Meer is a large inland lake. Breeding birds, among others are White-tailed Eagle, Osprey and Ferruginous Duck. In winter known for large numbers of waterfowl. The Meerbruchswiesen on the western side of the lake is a wet meadow landscape with shallow water areas, ponds, hedges, bushes and ditches and a well-known bird watching spot during spring and autumn migration. The area has several bird hides and bird observation towers (see the map). Among the birds you can encounter are Garganey, Common Shelduck, Smew, Goosander, Ruff, Northern Lapwing, Great Egret, Common Crane, Red-backed Shrike, Common Tern and Red Kite.

There are parking spaces at various places around the lake. Click on a P in the map to get directions to that spot. A cycle route around the lake passes all the good birdwatching points and the bird hides and bird observation towers.
