Description

Teichgebiet Wartha is part of the UNESCO-Biosphere Reserve "Oberlausitzer Heide und Teichlandschaft" (directly translated: "Upper Lusatian Heather and Pond landscape"), whereby pond landscape descibes the area pretty well. The ponds are partly also used for economical fish breeding. You can observe almost all kinds of water-dependent bird species, ranging from Whooper Swan, White-tailed Eagle over several duck species towards Reed Warbler. The bigger lakes can inhabit large numbers of moulting, breeding and resting waterfowl, especially ducks like Common Goldeneye, Garganey and Common Pochard. In spring, after the last frost, this area is a good spot for watching the blue moor frog.
