The area of Windknollen offers a habitat which is similar to the North American prairie. Larks, buntings and birds of prey can be easily observed.

Description

The area of Windknollen - close to the city of Jena - is a small mountain with a mosaic landscape containing mostly semi-dry short grass vegetation, temporarily water-filled depressions, bushes, mixed deciduous forest and isles of pine trees. Once a military training area it is now a little nature reserve (185 ha). Typical birds here are Eurasian Skylark, Wood Lark, Corn Bunting, Red-backed Shrike and European Stonechat. You can also easily find Yellowhammer, Grey-headed Woodpecker , Coal Tit, Eurasian Kestrel Common Buzzard and Red Kite.

You can access Windknollen only on foot from different directions, for example from the village of Closewitz or through Steingrund.
