This small soccor pitch, often called "Scops Copse", is one of the best and most well assured places to observe Eurasian Scops Owl on the island of Lesvos.
This small soccor pitch, often called "Scops Copse", is one of the best and most well assured places to observe Eurasian Scops Owl on the island of Lesvos. The owls breed here and have their daytime roosts (mostly) in the eucalyptus trees next to the road. The number of owls vary between several to about ten at a time. They tend to avoid direct sunlight and are therefore hard to find. Scan the trees between several to about 10 meters high. Avoid disturbance and keep your distance!
Another great species that can be found here is the Long-eared Owl. They are often found while scanning the trees for Eurasian Scops Owl.
The area is easy accessable and you can park your car on the parking lot of the soccor pitch terrain. Watch out for the road, because people tend to drive very hard!!
