Description

The largest part of nature reserve the Bemmelse Waard is open for visitors to roam around. The central part is a reserve for farmlandbirds. The area is easily accesble on foot or per bike.

The Bemmelse Waard has a few big lakes, the result of sand mining. Other lakes are former river beds. The lakes are good for wintering birds like SmewGoosanderCommon GoldeneyeGreat Crested GrebeEurasian WigeonTufted Duck and the occasional Northern Pintail. At night, big flocks of Greater White-fronted Goose come in to stay the night on the water. Along the shores Little Ringed Plover breeds and Common Tern breeds on a small island.

Old clay pits are now overgrown with marsh and rivierine forests. At night you can see beaver in the water. Common Kingfisher breeds at the ponds in these forests. Northern GoshawkCommon BuzzardEurasian NuthatchCommon Redstart and Grey Heron breed in the forests. During migration and sometimes even in summer Osprey spends the night in the forests and hunts in the lakes during the days. Also White-tailed Eagle visits this area. In one of the clay pits is a small colony of Black Tern.

In areas with thickets and thorny bushes European StonechatLesser WhitethroatGreater WhitethroatGrasshopper Warbler and Marsh Warbler are common species.

Along the river Sand Martin breeds.

In the center, a patch of land managed for meadowbirds like Northern Lapwing and Black-tailed Godwit. But even with this special management the Black-tailed Godwit didn't return (yet). But, Northern LapwingCommon RedshankEurasian OystercatcherMeadow Pipit and Western Yellow Wagtail can be seen here. In winter vast flocks of geese feed on grasses here.
