De Bijland

Gelderland  >  Netherlands

In summer, it's a swimmers paradise. But in winter, De Bijland is a paradise for birdwatchers. Thousands of ducks, grebes and geese can be seen.

Description

The lake De Bijland is the result of large scale sand mining. In summer it's nice to take a swim and listen to Common Nightingale in the bushes near the beach (one of the few last strongholds in the region). But it's best to visit the area in winter. Especially early in the morning when tens of thousands of Greater White-fronted Goose leave their sleeping place on the lake to go for a feed to farmers and in the neighborhood. And when the sun is really above the horizon you can see what waterbirds are on the lake. Species that are here the whole winter include Common GoldeneyeSmewGoosanderGreat Crested GrebeLittle GrebeTufted DuckCommon PochardGadwall and many more. If you're lucky you might see a more rare species like a scoter or a diver.
