Description

The 2500 hectare nature and water storage area De Onlanden is situated on the border of the provinces of Drenthe and Groningen. Sandwiched between the sandy areas of Drenthe and the Groninger clay areas, there is a low moor area here, where water from the Drenthe brooks has traditionally collected before flowing through the Lauwers and the Reitdiep to the Wadden Sea. In earlier times this was one big peat swamp. Over the past century, the low moor area has been used as a pasture area. But since 2009, this peat meadow area has been returned to nature. The Drenthe brooks flow through it again and a swamp can develop again with naturally changing water levels. The result is a paradise for birds. So close to the city of Groningen you can enjoy birds like Great Egret, Western Marsh Harrier, White-tailed Eagle and Great Bittern. But the area is also famous for the rarities that show up almost every year. Birds like Eurasian Hoopoe, Eurasian Black Vulture, Gull-billed Tern, Little Crake or Whiskered Tern where seen in recent years. A watchtower offers a magnificent view at a height of 26 meters: over De Onlanden, the skyline of the city of Groningen and the many marsh birds.

Nederlands: Op de grens van de provincies Drenthe en Groningen ligt het 2500 ha grote natuur- en waterbergingsgebied De Onlanden. Ingeklemd tussen de Drentse zandgebieden en de Groninger klei gebieden, ligt hier een laagveen gebied, waar van oudsher het water uit de Drentse beken zich verzamelde, alvorens via de Lauwers en het Reitdiep door te stromen naar de Waddenzee. In vroeger tijden was dit één groot veenmoeras. De afgelopen eeuw is het laagveengebied in gebruik geweest als weidegebied. Maar sinds 2009 is het veenweidegebied terug gegeven aan de natuur. De Drentse beken stromen er weer doorheen en er kan zich opnieuw een moeras ontwikkelen met natuurlijk wisselende waterstanden. Het resultaat is een paradijs voor vogels. Zo dicht bij de stad Groningen kun je hier genieten van de Great Egret, Western Marsh Harrier, White-tailed Eagle en Great Bittern. Maar het gebied staat ook bekend om de zeldzaamheden die bijna elk jaar opduiken. Vogels zoals Eurasian Hoopoe, Eurasian Black Vulture, Gull-billed Tern, Little Crake of Whiskered Tern werden de afgelopen jaren gezien. Een uitkijktoren biedt op 26 meter hoogte een schitterende uitzicht: over De Onlanden, op de skyline van de stad Groningen en op de vele moerasvogels.

Access

You can park at the observation tower (click on the P in the map for directions). The tower can be reached from the parking lot via a footpath (about 500 meters on foot). There are many other beautiful walks and cycling trips to be made in and around the Onlanden. The birdwatching tower is a good place to start. A circular walk of about 7 km from the parking lot is also indicated on the map.

Nederlands: Je kunt parkeren bij de uitkijktoren (klik op de P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving). De uitkijktoren is vanaf de parkeerplaats via een wandelpad te bereiken (ongeveer 500 meter lopen). Er zijn in en rondom de Onlanden nog veel mooie wandelingen en fietstochten te maken. De vogelkijktoren is een goede plek om te beginnen. Op de kaart staat vanaf de parkeerplaats ook een rondwandeling van zo'n 7 km aangegeven.
