The Falsterbo peninsula is one of northern Europe's finest places for watching migrating raptors. Ljungen is one of the classic areas on the peninsula.
Ljungen is a classic birdingplace at the Falsterbo peninsula for taking part of the sometimes magnificent migration of raptors in the autumn. On a good day the sky is full of birds passing over the vast field called Ljungen.
The area is a long and wide steppe that lays between Ljunghusen and Skanör, its very open which grants a good view on the from E incoming raptors. Ljungen got an observationtower at the corner of the forrest, but its seldom used to watch the migration.
In just about 2 months (mid august to mid october) thousands of buzzards, hawks and harriers pass by. Among those every year there are some gems like rare eagles, falcons and harriers, such as Greater Spotted Eagle, Lesser Spotted Eagle , Imperial Eagle, Steppe Eagle, Short-toed Snake Eagle, Montagu's Harrier, Pallid Harrier and Red-footed Falcon .
The numbers from the autumn 2019 were; Sparrowhawk 28900, Common Buzzard 8700 ( the record is 16665 in one day), European Honey-buzzard 4000, Western Marsh Harrier 780, Hen Harrier 340, Pallid Harrier 4o, Montagu's Harrier 6, Osprey 390, Merlin 250 and White Stork 106.
Were to stand is worth giving a second thought due to that were and how the birds passes the peninsula depends on the weather and the wind. If standing right the birds will pass over the head. A day with wind from SW the birds will pass over the south western part of Ljungen at the parking. On the other hand a day with SE will push the migration corridor to the north, then the best place to stand is at Haga roundabout or even further north next to the old train embankment. The drawback with the latter is that most birders stand at south west Ljungen nomatter the wind, and there is many pair of eyes to spot the rarieties. For more details about wind direction and the migration see the attached file below.
If going by bus, take nr 100 from Malmö ( 300 from Hyllie) and step of at Haga roundabout, the walk 500 meters S.
If going by car, take E6 S towards Trelleborg, turn right just S of Vellinge and follow road 100 out on the Falsterbo peninsula. At Haga roundabout take left and park outside the camping.
There are several places on the peninsula to watch the migration of raptors; Kolabacken and Nabben in SW corner, the canal a bit further E. Were to stand depends a lot on the wind direction, for more detailed information see attached link to a document below.
BE AWARE!! There are car thiefs specialized on birdwatchers and their optics!! Never leave anything in the car. This goes for the whole area and other parts of Skåne.
