Description
In 1980 the lake and mountain of Ichkeul were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites, then converted into a national park covering an area of 12 500 hectares. The vast body of water is the last trace of a chain of freshwater lakes that once stretched across North Africa. Over 200 bird species have been recorded in Ichkeul National Park and 500 plant species. November to February is the best time to visit. Among the birds you can spot in the area are Greater Flamingo, Eurasian Scops Owl, European Turtle Dove, Laughing Dove, Sardinian Warbler, Alpine Swift, Pallid Swift, Collared Pratincole, Stone-curlew, Short-toed Snake Eagle, Eurasian Hoopoe, European Bee-eater, Lesser Kestrel, European Honey-buzzard, Moussier's Redstart, White-headed Duck, Ferruginous Duck and Icterine Warbler.
