Description
Lake Marmara (Marmara Gölü) is located in the alluvial valley of Gediz River. Aside from being a recreational center, Lake Marmara is also an important source for fishing and agricultural irrigation and an Important Bird Area. It is an irrigation reservoir averaging 3,400 ha in area (depth 3-4 m). Reedbeds and marsh cover varies according to the water-level. Surrounded by hills to the north and north-east, with Gediz valley to the south and Akhisar valley to the north-west. Flood-plains are used for growing cotton, and cattle-grazing is widespread on the marshes. The lake offers shelter to some 20,000 waterbirds, including bird species, such as Whiskered Tern, Dalmatian Pelican, Great White Pelican, Ruddy Shelduck, Western Marsh Harrier, Cetti's Warbler, Penduline Tit, Black-necked Grebe and Greater Flamingo.
