Description
Burghead is situated on a narrow promontory projecting into the Moray Firth. The place is good for sea ducks in winter and waders on shore at low tide. Among the birds you can see are Common Eider, Long-tailed Duck, Common Scoter, Velvet Scoter, Razorbill, Common Guillemot, Black Guillemot, Red-breasted Merganser, Red Knot, Eurasian Curlew, Ruddy Turnstone, Purple Sandpiper, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Common Goldeneye, Rock Pipit and European Shag. In summer the bay is fishing ground for Osprey. Besides birds you can spot seals and dolphins. The Moray Firth is home to over 1500 common seals, and up to 500 grey seals come into the Firth in the summer. The Moray Firth is also home to the most northerly resident population of bottle nose dolphins in the world and on a calm day dolphins can be seen leaping out of the water.

Park at head of road and walk 100 metres to look-out (Visitor centre) or turn right to drive down to beach.
