Description
Dishley Pool (more of a lake) is hidden away behind an industrial estate in Loughborough, a number of open playing fields are on the pools Western side, a number of sports take place on Saturdays and Sundays, a visit on a weekday early morning is probably best. Check the sports fields for Eurasian Oystercatcher and Northern Lapwing often mixed in with the more numerous Black-headed Gull. In Winter these fields often have Redwing, Fieldfare and the odd Mistle Thrush.
Dishley Pool is a fishing lake (Western side only), in Autumn/Winter check through the ducks carefully. A Ring-necked Duck has been found here in recent years. More usual are Mallard, Tufted Duck, Northern Shoveler, Common Teal, Eurasian Wigeon, Gadwall and occasionally Common Goldeneye. The area attracts Eurasian Hobby, Blackcap and Willow Warbler during the Summer. Continue to walk further North to check along the River Soar and Grand Union Canal, Common Kingfisher are regular here. Be sure to check nearby electricity pylons, Peregrine Falcon sometimes rest here.
In recent years Long-eared Owl and Siberian Chiffchaff have been seen.

The long distance A6 road runs immediately South of the site. Press P on map for directions. The long layby South of the A6 is a bit further to walk, but BEWARE when crossing the sometimes very busy A6 road, the small Derby Road Playing Fields car park, quickly fills up when sports are being played especially at weekends. NOTE this small car park is locked overnight.
