Description
Chief habitats in Elan Valley and Gigrin Kites are: streams and open water, frequented by grebes, White-throated Dipper and Grey Wagtail. The ancient sessile oak woodland is home to Common Redstart, Pied Flycatcher, Wood Warbler, Eurasian Treecreeper, Sparrowhawk and open moorland containing Short-eared Owl, Merlin, Eurasian Curlew, European Golden Plover, Dunlin, Red Grouse, Northern Wheatear, Eurasian Skylark, European Stonechat Hen Harrier and Common Raven.

Access
Kite feeding station south of Rhayader feeds daily each afternoon. It has a hide and parking. Reservoirs are west of Rhayader and have several car parks, wetland birds usually at top ends. For a circular drive to see 4 of the 5 reservoirs, keep turning right to follow Elan valley. Claerwen reservoir is a dead end for cars.
