Description

Hurworth Burn Reservoir is surrounded by farmland, pasture and woodland. Reed beds are noted on the northern shire with fen Carr. Mainly wildfowl and passerines but if water levels are low, the area can attract various passage waders. Bird you can observe include Great Egret, Egyptian Goose, Osprey, Eurasian Hobby, Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler, Common Buzzard, Pink-footed Goose, Great Crested Grebe, Common Tern, Eurasian Tree Sparrow, Willow Tit, Greylag Goose, Whooper Swan, Common Teal and Gadwall.

Access

Hurworth Burn Reservoir is located 3 km east of Trimdon village. Follow Hurworth lane to car park at Hurworth burn railway path. Press P on the map for directions to the car park. Allow two hours. There's a good circular trail to follow around the water running for about 1.5 miles. Map of circular route at car park.

Path from car park holds warblers, Eurasian Tree Sparrow, tits, hirundines and swift. Reaching reservoir wildfowl, waders and birds of prey more obvious. Winter is good for skeins of Pink-footed Goose and Whooper Swan, Greater White-fronted Goose, Eurasian Wigeon, Mallard, Common Goldeneye and Common Teal.
