Description
Leazes Park is close to the centre of Newcastle and adjacent to the main Royal Victoria Infirmary hospital, and St James Park (Newcastle United Football Club, home of the Magpies!). This makes it a useful place to visit for anyone visiting Newcastle for business, football, and for long-stay patients in the hospital who have only limited mobility. The usual urban and suburban species can be seen, and the lake is large enough (and with an island) to attract the odd passing rarer wildfowl like Red-crested Pochard and Slavonian Grebe. A small wild area with reduced accessibility gives more timid birds like Redwing and Brambling an opportunity to feed undisturbed. In one recent year a Firecrest wintered, unusual this far north. Nearby on Richardson Road, a number of Rowan trees outside the RVI regularly attract Bohemian Waxwing in invasion autumns.

Access
Most easily accessed by foot or bike. Bus services 32, 36, 47, and 84A all stop at the entrance, and the main Haymarket and Eldon Square bus stations are only 5 minutes walk away. Limited car parking (££) is available. All the paths are tarmac surfaced, and almost all are fully wheelchair accessible (a couple of steeper paths have steps, but alternative paths exist).

Several years ago the lake was drained for cleaning and repairs; the exposed mud attracted both Common Greenshank and Common Sandpiper, but return visits by these species are unlikely.
