Description
Martin Mere is a Site of Special Interest. The name of the centre comes from the mere on the west side of the reserve, which is ringed by more than ten observation hides. This reserve is at its best in winter, attracting huge flocks of Pink-footed Goose, Eurasian Wigeon and Common Teal, many Whooper Swan, and occasional rarer birds such as Snow Goose, American Wigeon and Green-winged Teal. It is also excellent for wintering birds of prey such as Hen Harrier, Peregrine Falcon and Merlin. Waders such as Black-tailed Godwit, Ruff and Common Redshank can be seen from hides as well as rarer smaller birds such as Brambling in the woodlands.
