Description
Set on the South Wales coast, Merthyr Mawr Nature Reserve is home to the highest dune in Wales, known as the Big Dipper. There are also grasslands, saltmarsh, beach and woods within the reserve. Recent highlights include: Curlew Sandpiper, Avocet, Purple Sandpiper, Hen Harrier, Red Kite, Eurasian Goshawk, Montagu's Harrier, Water Pipit, Firecrest, Lesser Whitethroat and European Turtle Dove.

Access
Park in Newton village in Porthcawl and walk through the dunes and along the beach (high disturbance on weekends). Also drive along the B4524 toward Ogmore by Sea. Visit the high tide wader roost at Newton Point in winter. Allow a half day at least to explore.
