Description
The Solway Firth is an extensive and remote area of saltmarsh, mudflats, sandy coast, dunes and reedbeds attracting a wide range of wetland birds. Breeding and passage waders include Common Redshank, Ruddy Turnstone, Eurasian Oystercatcher and Eurasian Curlew. Winter wildfowl and seabirds include Northern Shoveler, Common Teal, Whooper Swan, Pink-footed Goose, Barnacle Goose, Common Goldeneye, Common Eider, and divers, grebes, and auks. Also look out for Little Egret, Common Kingfisher, Eurasian Skylark, European Stonechat and Meadow Pipit. Otters are possible, plus seals, porpoise and dolphin offshore. At Grune Point the receding sea leaves tidal lagoons ideal for rockpooling.
