Description
An extensive area of self-sown scrubland holds good numbers of warblers in summer, mainly Willow Warbler and Common Chiffchaff, but also Lesser Whitethroat and Blackcap. More mature trees provide habitat for Tawny Owl. Eurasian Nuthatch and Rose-ringed Parakeet have become common in recent years. The Wallsend Burn holds regular Common Kingfisher and Grey Wagtail, and occasional White-throated Dipper in winter. In its lower tidal section Common Redshank is regular, and the semi-tame Mallards can attract other ducks, including Common Shelduck, Common Teal, and more rarely Northern Pintail and Mandarin Duck. There is limited viewing of the River Tyne where the stream runs into the Tyne, but is still worth checking for inland seabirds on the main river; Great Northern Diver, Common Guillemot and Razorbill have all been seen here on occasion, and in summer there is a constant procession of Kittiwakes moving to and from their nesting sites further upsteam.
