Description
Weymouth gets very busy during the Summer peak holiday season and is best avoided during this time. Weymouth Harbour is protected by The Nothe and Pavilion Piers, two Easterly projecting peninsulas giving excellent views of the bay. During Winter Red-breasted Merganser, Common Eider, Common Scoter, Great Crested Grebe and Great Northern Diver are the most common, smaller numbers of Red-throated Diver, Black-throated Diver, Long-tailed Duck, Slavonian Grebe, Black-necked Grebe, Red-necked Grebe, Common Guillemot and Razorbill can be expected. During Spring returning Sandwich Tern, Common Tern and Little Tern are usually seen. During periods of prolonged freezing conditions Greater Scaup, Smew and Goosander seek out the bays sheltered conditions. During Autumn Nothe Gardens can hold Firecrest, Pied Flycatcher and Northern Wheatear (an early morning visit is best). Autumn gales especially from the East can give seabirds such as European Storm Petrel, Little Gull and Sabine's Gull. Weymouth Bay has an extremely large Black-headed Gull roost during Winter months. From Pavilion Pier check carefully through the flock for more unusual species.
