Description
Witton Lakes are in the Stockland Green area of Birmingham. The two lakes are former drinking water reservoirs. The larger lake is used for boating and the smaller shallower lake is dedicated to wildlife. On the Northern side of the lakes is Witton Lakes Eco Hub, which has a cafe and toilets. The park has open grassland, wooded areas and wildflower meadows, numerous streams lead in and out of the lakes and a community orchard had been planted. The park has a very active friends group.
(*1) (press STAR on map), check large lake in Winter for Eurasian Wigeon, Gadwall and good numbers of Little Grebe. Lower fish numbers mean Great Crested Grebe are only in low numbers, Mute Swan numbers can be very high for a inner city location and Common Goldeneye and Goosander occasionally turn up.
(*2), the smaller lake can have Common Teal, Northern Shoveler, Eurasian Moorhen, Eurasian Coot and Grey Heron though there is a lot of movement of ducks between each lake. A number of different species of Gull (Laridae) have been seen including Common Gull and unusually for such an inland site Kittiwake.
(*3), the area of trees at the Eastern end of the park has Eurasian Siskin and Coal Tit, Long-tailed Tit, Eurasian Blue Tit and Great Tit are numerous. During Spring/Summer Greater Whitethroat, Willow Warbler, Common Chiffchaff, Blackcap, House Martin, Barn Swallow and Common Swift can be seen. Common Tern regularly turn up on passage.
