Description

The Cosumnes River Preserve is a 51,000-acre protected area in California’s Central Valley, about 20 miles south of Sacramento. The area has a good mix of habitats with spring and fall riparian woodland migrants, many wintering cranes, shorebirds and waterfowl. Over 250 bird species have been recorded. Birds you can observe include Greater White-fronted Goose, Canada Goose, Cinnamon Teal, Northern Shoveler, Mallard, Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal, Anna's Hummingbird, American Coot, Sandhill Crane, Black-necked Stilt, American Avocet, Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Black-crowned Night Heron, Red-tailed Hawk, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, American Kestrel, California Scrub-Jay, Oak Titmouse, Tree Swallow, Bushtit, Wrentit, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Western Bluebird, White-crowned Sparrow, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Red-winged Blackbird, Common Yellowthroat, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Gadwall, and Blue-winged Teal.

The Cosumnes River Preserve is located about 20 miles south of Sacramento. From Sacramento, I5 south to Walnut Grove Road exit, east to Thornton Avenue, north on Thornton Avenue to Cosumnes River Preserve. Press P on the map for directions. Also visit nearby Desmond Road for seasonal ponds.
