Ferrybank is part of the Wexford Harbour area which is famous for its waterbird populations. This particular part is easy to access from Wexford Town and provides an opportunity to see many species on the shore and out in the harbour itself.
In this part of the harbour, knipa, småskrake, skäggdopping and svartnäbbad islom can be regularly seen in winter. svarthalsad dopping, svarthakedopping and storlom have also been seen from here on occasion (a telescope is recommended for the harbour).
The rock armour features at Ferrybank are regularly used for roosting at hide tide, where hundreds and sometimes thousands of waders can be seen including rödspov, tofsvipa and strandskata.
During the breeding season, sävsångare, rörsångare and vattenrall nest in the reedbeds. There is also a small backsvala colony establishing itself on the eroded cliff face. All of the Irish Tern species can also be seen around Ferrybank, particularly during the post-breeding season period.
