Beskrivning
The Sayil Archaeological Zone is a Maya archaeological site located in the Puuc region. It flourished during the Terminal Classic period, roughly between 800 and 1000 AD. Sayil is renowned for its distinctive Puuc architectural style, which features intricately carved stone facades, mosaic patterns, and ornamental columns. The most notable structure at Sayil is the "Palace of Sayil," a long, low building with three levels and numerous rooms. Sayil is situated within the Puuc Biosphere Reserve, which means its preservation is closely linked to protecting the surrounding natural environment.
The archaeological site is small but the surrounding lowland jungle is extensive. It provides habitat for many resident and migratory birds. Around Sayil, you can expect to see a variety of birds such as trogons, motmots, woodpeckers, orioles, flycatchers and several species of hummingbirds.
