Beskrivning
Lower Hartshay and the Cromford Canal support a wide range of birds throughout the year. sparvhök are often seen hunting over the village and surrounding fields, while ormvråk soar overhead and the occasional röd glada drifts through. gråhäger regularly feed along the reedbeds and canal edges, with forsärla picking insects from the water margins. stjärtmes move through the trees in busy family parties, and cettisångare are frequently heard calling from dense reedbeds.
Autumn and winter bring an increase in wildfowl and passage birds, with kanadagås , grågås , gräsand , Kricka and bläsand using the canal and nearby waters. tofsvipa , enkelbeckasin and vattenrall may appear in wetter areas, while skrattmås , Gråtrut and silltrut gather on open water and fields. Thrushes are a highlight at this time of year, with rödvingetrast and björktrast arriving from the continent alongside resident taltrast and dubbeltrast. Mixed tit flocks, kungsfågel , steglits , grönsiska and Gråsiska are regular, and corvids including kaja , råka , Skata and nötskrika are ever-present.
Spring and summer see the area come alive with breeding birds and migrants. tornseglare , ladusvala and hussvala feed low over the canal and reedbeds, often joined by hunting lärkfalk in warm weather. Reedbeds hold rörsångare , sävsångare and cettisångare , while ärtsångare and gransångare sing from scrub and hedgerows. forsärla , rörhöna , sothöna , blåmes and talgoxe regularly breed along the canal, and sånglärka can be heard over nearby fields. Occasional highlights include brunsiska gräshoppsångare , storspov and tornfalk.
Overall, this short walk offers excellent habitat diversity and rewarding birding in all seasons, with something new to see throughout the year.
