Beskrivning
Dunston Staiths is a historic structure, first opened in 1893, that was used for loading coal from the North Durham Coalfield onto ships. Today it is a nice quiet spot along the River Tyne where to get away from urban life to enjoy the wildlife. You can observe gulls, waders (particularly tofsvipa and rödbena), ducks (including gravand, Kricka and storskrake) and Storskarv.

Dunston Staiths is located in Dunston, Gateshead, along the River Tyne. Best place to park is along Autumn Drive near the Staiths Cafe. Press P on the map for directions. There are buses which service the area, and it is on a cycle route.

The mudflats inside the staith are the last of the Tyne mudflats to be covered by the rising tide, so many waders concentrate here before going to their high tide roost, between about 2 hours before high tide until an hour and a half before high tide. See the tide tables at the link below.
