You initally encounter open grassy fields yielding Red-winged Blackbird, Eastern Meadowlark, Savannah Sparrow and Northern Harrier. Bare trees and short poles my have Loggerhead Shrike. The suggested road continues past a canal and camps bordered by shrubs and forest with Swamp Sparrow, egrets and herons. Watch the wires by the road for White-winged Dove, Mourning Dove and Red-tailed Hawk.
The lake shore can have Brown Pelican, Osprey, Laughing Gull, Ring-billed Gull, Least Tern, and Forster's Tern.

The Howze Beach area is accessed from Exit 261 on I-10 to Oak Harbor Blvd in Slidell, Louisiana then turn right on E. Howze Beach Road. Upon returning to Oak Harbor Blvd turn right and follow the road to the Harbor Center and check the pond for ducks and grebes. Exploring roads and adjacent neighborhoods can sometimes be productive.
There is no public transportation to the site and it's best birded by road with frequent stops. Most parking is roadside with the exception of the lake shore near the old fishing pier and the Harbor Center. Press a P on the map for directions.
