Beskrivning
Race Point Beach is one of the premier birding hotspots of Massachusetts. It is located at the northernmost tip of Cape Cod and juts miles out into the Atlantic Ocean. Race Point is surrounded on three sides by the sea and within the Cape Cod National Seashore. Deep oceanic waters almost reach the beach at Race Point, drawing rarely seen pelagic birds from far offshore. Plus, Race Point Beach lies at the inflection point between Cape Cod Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. How much you will see depends on the time of the year, wind direction, weather conditions and tidal stages, but you will always encounter some good birds.
Some of the most commonly sought after birds include: Dovekie, Common Murre, Thick-billed Murre, Black-legged Kittiwake, Wilson's Storm Petrel, Bonaparte's Gull, Iceland Gull, and several species of ducks, jaegers, loons and shearwaters. July and August are good for spotting seabirds. A spotting scope is advised. Shorebirs nest and stage on this beach from late spring to fall. Peak migration for loons, gannets and alcids is in September and November.
